Singapore's Chinatown evolved around 1821 when the first Chinese junk
arrived from Xiamen, Fujian province in China. The passengers, all men,
set up home around the south of the Singapore River which is known today
as Telok Ayer.

Named after the Gelam tree which used to grow in the area, Kampong Glam

Istana Kampong Glam (Sultan’s palace) has been converted into a heritage
museum, the Malay Heritage Centre, to showcase the rich history and
culture of Singapore’s Malay community.

Isles of Singapore
Kusu Island
A giant sea turtle saves two shipwrecked sailors - a Malay and a
Chinese. As an act of thanks, the two men build a Chinese temple, a
Malay shrine and a huge turtle sculpture.

bus 2 or 29 to Changi Village bus interchange, followed by a 10-minute
boat ride from the Changi Point jetty. Cost of the boat ride is SGD 2

Sentosa - a themed attraction, tropical resort, nature park and heritage

Getting There: Take the Sentosa Bus from Habourfront Centre Interchange

A former penal settlement, this large hilly island has been transformed

CHIJMES
Having undergone a spectacular facelift as a national heritage site,
CHIJMES (pronounced “chimes”) is now a popular dining, shopping and
entertainment site. CHIJMES Hall, the restored chapel, provides a
breath-taking backdrop for musicals, recitals, theatrical performances
and weddings.

Built in 1894, Lau Pa Sat is the largest remaining Victorian filigree

Chinese heroism and nationalism are recurring themes at the Sun Yat Sen

Asian Civilisations MuseumAs its name suggests, the Asian Civilisations Museum focuses on the
heritage of Asian cultures. The first wing (ACM I), located at Armenian
Street, is a meticulously restored neo-classical building dating back to
1910.

A beacon of hope for the hopeless. The Changi Chapel, housed within the

Buddhism is one of the religious pillars of the East. Nei Xue Tang’s

from Japan and Gandhara to China and Indonesia.

At the Western end of Singapore lies a jewel of artworks and cultural

Parks, Gardens & Nature Reserves
Agricultural Farms
Do you know there are over 200 real working farms in the six
Agrotechnology Parks in Singapore, occupying a total land area of 1,500
hectares? Bounded by the land and manpower constraints, farms practise
modern intensive farming that suits the tropical climate. This makes
them interesting as unique Singapore nature attractions.Bukit Timah Nature Reserve
It may surprise many to know that the small city-state of Singapore is
only one of two cities in the world to have a significant area of
primary rainforest within its boundaries - the other being Rio de
Janeiro.

For environmentalists and conservationists, Chek Jawa is a gem of marine
wildlife. Located at the eastern tip of Pulau Ubin, Chek Jawa is a
collection of six distinct habitats - coastal forest, mangroves, sand
bars, seagrass lagoon, rocky shore & coral rubble. Some of these
habitats can be found at Pulau Sekudu, which is considered part of Chek
Jawa.
Getting There: Take the MRT to Tanah Merah station (EW4).Then take SBS
bus 2 or 29 to Changi Village bus interchange. Then take a bumboat ride
from Changi Point Ferry Terminal (SGD 2 for a single trip). The bumboat
service operates from 6 am to at least 8 pm. Once on Pulau Ubin, either
rent a bicycle from one of the bicycle kiosks or take a local taxi to
Chek Jawa.Chinese Garden
Step into the Chinese Garden and you might just imagine you’re in
ancient China! Built in 1975 and designed by Prof Yuen-chen Yu, a
well-known architect from Taiwan, the Chinese Garden is modeled along
the northern Chinese imperial style of architecture and landscaping.

Park
Looking for a one-stop family fun site? It has to be East Coast Park. Located
off the East Coast Parkway, the beach and landscaped terrains make East Coast
Park a weekend favourite for Singaporeans.

taxi from Orchard Road, or take SBS bus 16 and alight at Marine Terrace. Then

Established way back in 1859 as an arms store, barracks and hospital,
Fort Canning contains precious memorials of Singapore's early history
dating back to the 14th century and Sir Stamford Raffles' personal
bungalow.

and walk towards Fort Canning Road.Labrador Park
Labrador Park’s high vantage point led the British to identify it as a
defence site to protect the entrance to the harbours of Singapore in
1843. Now, it is an oasis of tranquillity and offers a picturesque view
of the sea.
Open: 24 hours, park is lit from 7pm to 12 am. Getting There: Services
10, 30, 51, 143 and 176. Alight along Pasir Panjang Road and proceed on
foot via Labrador Villa Road. Parks 408: a direct service that plys
between HarbourFront Bus Interchange/MRT Station and Labrador Park
(Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 9am to 7pm). The service
departs from the interchange every 30 minutes.MacRitchie, Peirce & Seletar Reservoirs
The three reservoirs are popular sites for family outings and picnics as
they provide a quiet respite to the hustle and bustle of city living.
Surrounded by broad swamps, jungles and greenery, these reservoirs run
through the central northern parts of Singapore, providing a serene
backdrop to the cityscape.

Take in the panoramic views of the harbour, Sentosa and other Southern

Tower 2.Pasir Ris Park
Right in the eastern part of Singapore is a favourite family weekend

rich mangrove flora and fauna.

then board SBS bus 403.Singapore Botanic Gardens
The Singapore Botanic Gardens epitomises the tropical island's luxuriant
parks. Spread over 52 hectares and close to the centre of the city, the
Gardens showcases many outstanding plant collections. Some highlights
include the National Orchid Garden, the Ginger Garden, and the Evolution
Garden.

The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is Singapore's first and only protected
wetland nature reserve. Home to over 500 species of tropical flora and

point" for birds on the East Asian Australasian Flyway.

Cable skiing or wakeboarding as its name implies, is waterskiing or

Horse racing in Singapore has had a long and illustrious history,
beginning in 1842 with the formation of the Singapore Sporting Club by a group
of racing enthusiasts.
Getting There: Take the north south line to NS7, Kranji staion, which is
located adjacent to the MRT Plaza entrance of the racecourse. Or take bus
services 170, TIBS178, TIBS925, TIBS960 and TIBS961 which ply along Woodlands
Road and stop in front of the Kranji MRT station.

World War II Sites
Battle Box
Tucked into the hillside of Fort Canning is the Battle Box, the largest
underground command centre of the British Malaya Command Headquarters
during World War II. Comprising 22 rooms linked by a corridor, this
complex is bomb-proof and also capable of recycling its own air supply.
Open: 10.00am-6.00pm (Daily). Last entry is at 5.00pm. Getting There:
Take the MRT to Dhoby Ghaut Station (NS24) and walk uphill past Park
Mall and towards Fort Canning Road.Changi Chapel & Museum
A beacon of hope for the hopeless. The Changi Chapel, housed within the
open-air courtyard of the Museum, is a symbolic replica of the many
chapels built during the Japanese Occupation.
Open: 9.30am to 4.30pm (daily unless otherwise advised). Getting There:
Take SBS bus 2 from Tanah Merah MRT station (EW4). Alight at the bus
stop right in front of Changi Chapel and Museum (after Changi Women's
Prison/Drug Rehabilitation Centre).Civilian War Memorial
This memorial was erected to remember the shared experiences and
struggles of the major races of Singapore during World War II. Every
year on 15 February, a memorial service is held here to remember the
victims of the war.
Getting There: A short walk from City Hall MRT Station (EW13/NS25).Fort
Siloso
Built by the British in the 1880s to protect the western entrance to the
Singapore harbour, Fort Siloso is the only preserved British coastal
fortification in Singapore today.

Green Line.Johore Battery
Built by the British in 1939 for the defence of Singapore, the Johore
Battery is a gun emplacement site consisting of a labyrinth of tunnels.
The tunnels were used to store ammunition to support three monster guns
that could fire 15-inch shells.

Merah MRT Station (EW4) and alight at the bus stop opposite Selarang
Camp. Alternatively, take a taxi.Kranji War Memorial
Kranji War Memorial honours the men from Britain, Australia, Canada, Sri
Lanka, India, Malaya, the Netherlands and New Zealand who gave their
lives for freedom in World War II.
Open: 7.00am-6.00pm (daily). Getting There: Take SBS bus 170 from Rochor
Road or take the MRT to Kranji Station (NS7) and it is a 5-minute walk
away.Reflections at Bukit.Chandu
Go back in time to 1942 when 1,400 soldiers of the Malay Regiment made
their stand against 13,000 Japanese soldiers, choosing death over
dishonour.
