Singapore is an island-state in Southeast Asia, connected by
bridges to Malaysia. Founded as a British trading colony in
1819, since independence it has become one of the world's
most prosperous countries, sporting the world's busiest
port.
It is linked to Malaysia by two causeway bridges,and the key
islands of the Riau archipelago of Indonesia are just a
quick ferry trip away. Thailand and the Philippines are a
short plane journey away. Singapore with an airport served
by more than 69 airlines is very much the gateway to
southeast asia.
Located at one of the crossroads of the world, Singapore’s
strategic position has helped it grow into a major centre
for trade,communications and tourism. Its geographical
location is 136.8 km north of the equator, between latitudes
103 degrees 38’E and 104 degree 06’E .
CLIMATE
Singapore receives an average rainfall of around 2,370 mm.
There are some instances of 24-hour rainfall recorded in the
previous years. The diurnal range of temperature varies
between minimum 23 to 26 degree centigrade and a maximum of
31 to 34 degree centigrade. During the early morning time
the relative humidity remains at its height while during the
mid-afternoon it’s around 60%.
LANGUAGES
There are 4 official languages in Singapore: Malay,
Mandarin, Tamil and English. English is the language of
business and administration, and is widely spoken and
understood. Most Singaporeans are bilingual, and speak their
mother tongue as well as English. Malay is the national
language.
VISA
A valid passport or international travel document is
required for all visitors. Visas are not generally required
for social visits of fewer than 14 days, and visitors
arriving as tourists are given a 14-day social visit pass on
arrival. If you want to stay longer, you may apply to the
Immigration Department after your arrival.
Airport Tax
CURRENCY
The local currency is Singapore dollars and
cents. Other than the Singapore dollar, the United States
and Australian dollars, Japanese yen and British pound are
also accepted in most shopping centres and big departmental
stores.
